A college student was stabbed to death and his girlfriend was severely injured after four drug addicts attacked them at an isolated location near Bandra-Worli Sea Link (BWSL) in Bandra on Saturday around 10.30pm.

The Bandra police managed to arrest all accused within twelve hours.

The arrested people have been identified as Riyaz Raees Khan, 19, Saddam Mohiuddin Siqqique alias Lallan, 19, Umed Dadamiya Shaikh, 18, and Javed Feroz Chaudhary alias Java, 19, all residents of Lalmati slums in Bandra (West).

The deceased, identified as Rushabh Yadav, 19, was a resident of Government Colony in Bandra (West) and his female friend also resides in the same locality. Yadav was an SYBSc student at Vidyalankar College in Wadala, while the girl is pursuing the Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine & Surgery (BAMS) degree.

“Yadav and his friend were sitting at an isolated location when four boys came up to them and tried to snatch the girl’s bag. Yadav resisted, but one of the boys took out a knife and stabbed him in the abdomen. They also slit the girl’s arm,” said senior inspector Samad Shaikh of the Bandra police station. He added that the four fled after taking Yadav’s wallet and the girl’s purse.

Yadav and his friend were rushed to Bhabha Hospital. He was alive at that time but succumbed to injuries after being treated for a few hours. His friend was discharged from the hospital later, he said.

According to the police, Yadav and his friend would frequently visthe spot near BWSL and spend some time there during evenings. “We picked up several people from the nearby locality and interrogated them. Finally, the real culprits were caught within 12 hours of the crime. Interrogation of the arrested people revealed that they were involved in several cases of robbery and chain snatching,” said Shaikh.

“They are drug addicts and were recently arrested. They were remanded in judicial custody, but they later got out on bail. They will be produced in court in this case on Monday,” said a police official.

Yadav’s father Balchandra Yadav, who works in the directorate general of information and the public relations office at Mantralaya, said, “I have lost my teenage son, and the culprits have been arrested.” Asked if a lack of police presence was responsible for the incident, he said, “Holding anyone responsible is not going to bring my son back.”
